Information Literacy
Information literacy is a critical skill set in the digital age, encompassing the ability to access, evaluate, analyse and ethically use information from diverse sources. Information literacy involves the search for information using tools such as online databases, search engines, academic sources e.tc . Information literacy is an essential competency for success in education, the workplace and everyday life. Based on the needs related to the rapid development of information technology and evolving information society, Librarians and others have began teaching information skills to all types of information users to ensure that they gain information fluency so they can become productive and effective information users both in the education environment and in the work environment.
Characteristics of an information literate individual
Someone who is information literate has to demonstrate the ability to recognise the need for information, where she/he identifies gaps in knowledge and understands when reliable information is necessary to solve a problem and make informed decisions.Also has to find information efficiently, this is when the individual employs appropriate search strategies, tools and resources such as catalogs, credible online platforms e.t.c to access relevant information in an timely manner.An information literate individual has to evaluate information efficiently, this is when an individual is able to assess the accuracy, authority, validity and relevance of sources, distinguishing between trustworthy evidence and misinformation. Additionally an information literate applies information effectively, where an individual is able to integrate and organise information to address specific tasks ,create new knowledge or communicate ideas and lastly an information literate uses information ethically, he/she respects intellectual property by citing sources properly, avoids plagiarism and adheres to legal and ethical standards in information use.
Information literacy competency standards for higher education
They were developed to provide a framework for teaching and assessing information literacy for higher education,they explain the main skills students need and to be considered information literate, here are the standards:
l Find information effectively -Students use search tool and strategies to locate information they need quickly and in different format.
l Judge information carefully -Students check if the information is reliable, accurate, and useful for their tasks.
l Add new information to what they already know- Students connect new ideas with their existing knowledge and use it to solve problems or create new insights.
l Use information for a clear purpose -Students organise and present information well, adapting it to school work or personal needs.
l Respect rules and information use -Students give credit to sources ,avoid plagiarism and follow copyright and ethical guidelines.
